Latane W. "Chip" Talley, Jr.

"As a witness to the slow decline of my hometown, I am deeply concerned about the future of Courtland, VA. By casting your vote for me on November, 3rd, you are casting a vote for a chance at a bright future for our beloved community."

Overview

Courtland doesn’t need a stranger with a slogan. It needs a local born and raised man who knows Courtland, VA; the town, the river, the history, and the people who keep it going.

On this website, you will find information about my background, my vision for the future, and the key priorities that guide my work.

Priority Issues

What Courtland needs fixed first

01
Town water that people can count on

The town owns the water. The county owns the sewer. Neighbors should not have to guess who to call when the pressure drops or a bill does not make sense. I will treat water quality, leaks, and clear answers as a core job of the mayor’s office.

02
A Main Street that looks alive

Courtland is the county seat and a historic town on the Nottoway. Empty storefronts and tired lots do not match that. I will work with local shops, farm businesses, and the Historic Courtland Association so downtown looks like people still take pride in it.

03
A town that is kept up

Fair, consistent code enforcement. Streets, ditches, and public lots maintained before they become complaints. A working partnership with the Southampton County Sheriff on speeding, blight, and after-hours problems—not speeches after the fact.

04
One town, working with the county

Courtland cannot fix roads, sewer, or growth alone. I will sit at the table with the county, fight for our share, and keep Town Hall open so citizens and council members hear the same facts at the same time.

Vision & Beliefs

I am guided by a set of core values and beliefs that inform my decisions and actions, such as:

Goals

Four promises. One town. No slogans from somewhere else.

Courtland can do better—and we will.

I am a strong supporter of the Courtland community. As your Mayor, I will not raise taxes.

Respect the past. Raise the standard.

I have an extremely strong connection with the Historic Courtland Association and am a board member of Mahone's Tavern.

Empower The Voice of the Citizens

As your Mayor, I will empower the town councilmen as well as the citizens to create the best living environment for the future of Courtland.

Keep Courtland working—for the people who live here.

I served 31 years at the local, state, and federal law enforcement level. As your Mayor, I will keep the water running, the books honest, and Town Hall open to every neighbor in Courtland.
